Improvements in the reproductive performance of sows based on better management techniques, feed formulations and advanced genetics has led to more total born piglets per sow. But there has not been an equivalent increase in the amount of colostrum produced which puts piglets born at lower birth weights at a disadvantage.
Various metabolic functions, including some associated with energy production, take place in the liver and thus good liver function is crucial for optimal production. Carnitine is essential for fat metabolism but endogenous synthesis is not sufficient to meet the metabolic requirement of the sow during gestation.
Carnitol-L® (L-carnitine) supplementation in sow diets during the last 4 weeks of gestation significantly increased the birthweights of piglets.
